2013 mayhem in Dhaka: Hefajat leader Ihteshamul denied bail
A Dhaka court today rejected a bail petition of Maulana Ihteshamul Haque Sakhi, former joint office secretary of Hefajat-e-Islam, and sent him to jail in a case filed with Paltan Police Station over the 2013 mayhem in Dhaka.
Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Yeasmin Ara passed the order after Md Kamrul Hasan Talukder, an inspector of the Detective Branch of police and also the investigation officer of the case, produced Ihteshamul before the court on completion of his four-day remand in the case.
In today's forwarding report, the IO said Ihteshamul gave important information about the 2013 mayhem, which was being verified. Moreover, he will be shown arrested in one more case filed over the recent violence, he mentioned. Appeals have been made before the court to keep Ihteshamul in jail until the investigation is completed, the IO said.
On the other hand, the defence for the accused submitted a petition seeking his bail, saying that the IO failed to gather any information from the accused about the mayhem. So, he should be granted bail.
Upon hearing both sides, the magistrate rejected the bail petitions and sent him to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
On April 22, Ihteshamul was arrested from Dhaka's Bangshal area for his alleged involvement with the 2013 mayhem in Dhaka.
Later he was shown arrested in the case filed and placed on a four-day remand in the case.
