Bangladesh Law Digest (BDLD) in collaboration with Faculty of Law, University of Chittagong hosted a seminar on ‘Law and Literature,’ a distinctive topic on which distinguished legal scholars of Bangladesh for the first time articulated their views and ideas in public, on March 22, 2018 at A. K. Khan Law Faculty Auditorium, University of Chittagong. The honorable Vice Chancellor of Chittagong University Professor Dr. Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury was present as the chief guest while Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Professor of Law, University of Dhaka and former chairman, National Human Rights Commission graced the seminar as the keynote speaker. Around 250 law students and law professional attended the seminar.
The program was started with welcome speech by Faysal Saleh Al Mahdi, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of BDLD. He welcomed everyone and highlighted the aims and objectives as well as the activities of BDLD.
The seminar chief guest Professor Dr. Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury mainly recollected the memories of his poetic life and recited poems.
Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman said, “Law acts for the people but it is not possible to know the people individually. Literature helps to know the people very well. Literature speaks about the people. To establish justice for the people, a law professional must know literature.” In his speech, Dr. Rahman urged, “Every law professional must be energetic as well as poetic.”
Dr. SM Masum Billah, Assistant Professor of Law, Jagannath University, as one of the distinguished panel speakers of the seminar, talked on a very interesting topic ‘Musical Interpretation of Law’.
Iftekhar Mahmud, Assistant Professor of Law, Eastern University articulated that literature is not as rude and selfish as law; literature does not deprive anyone, it adore all with due care. Muhammad Rezaur Rahman, Assistant Professor of Law, University of Asia Pacific, has tried to explain the relationship between law and literature from philosophical point of view.
Mohammad Golam Sarwar, Lecturer in Law, University of Dhaka immaculately identified the regulatory form of law and sought to discover the implication of law and literature. Arpeeta Shams Mizan, Lecturer in Law, University of Dhaka presented the analysis how women's position and representation in literature influence the nature and structure of the law.
Saeed Ahsan Khalid, Assistant Professor of Law, University of Chittagong moderated the session of panel discussion.
Professor ABM Abu Noman, Dean, Faculty of Law, Chittagong University chaired the seminar. He manifested the relation between law and literature saying that law and literature are complementary to each other.
The program was followed by an evening of poetry hosted by ‘Shopnojatri’. Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman recited poems as a part of the poetry evening. Students and guests immensely enjoyed the recitation of Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman and it soothed the minds of the audience as well.
