Justice Abu Sayeed remembered for role during Liberation War

Justice Abu Sayeed Chowdhury played a leading diplomatic role to build suport among the international communities the country's Liberation War, speakers said at a programme yesterday.
The commemoration programme was organised by Justice Abu Sayeed Chowdhury Smrity Sangsad at Liberation War Museum in the capital, marking his 26th death anniversary.
Addressing as the chief guest, Human Rights Commission Chairman Mizanur Rahman said Justice Sayeed was one of the unsung heroes of the Liberation War.
Bangla Academy Director General Shamsuzzaman Khan said Sayeed deserved Shadhinota Padak for his contributions. It is a matter of great regret that he was not even nominated for the award, he said.
Prof Syed Anwar Husain, former state minister for information Prof Abu Sayeed, prominent dramatist Mamunur Rashid, poet Asad Chowdhury and general secretary of the sangsad Advocate Abdul Baset Majumder also spoke.
The speakers unveiled a book of essays written by Abu Sayeed titled "Sadhinotar Protisrutee o Onnano" (Promise of the liberation and other essays) on the occasion.
Justice Abu Sayeed was one of the presidents of Bangladesh and also served as the vice-chancellor of Dhaka University during the Liberation War. Son of Abdul Hamid Chowdhury, former Speaker of EP Provincial Assembly, Justice Sayeed died on August 2, 1987 in London.
