IOJ chief picked up, later freed without reason
Police allegedly picked up Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ) Chairman Abdul Latif Nezami from his residence in the capital yesterday and released him after a while without giving any reason.
Police officials, however, denied the incident.
The IOJ chief said two to three policemen went to his home at Gopalbagh around 9:30am and asked him to go with them. "They kept me in the lockup of Wari Police Station for an hour and freed me around 11:00am without any interrogation," he told The Daily Star last night.
Over nine hours after he was freed, Khaleda Zia, chief of the 19-party alliance that includes IOJ, issued a statement demanding Nezami's release. BNP later apologised for the mistake.
