Govt evicting adivasis for BGB battalion

Claims Santu Larma

The government is setting up a new battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Dighinala in Khagrachhari by evicting indigenous people from their ancestral land, said Santu Larma.
Jyotirindra Bodhipriya Larma, popularly known as Santu Larma, chairman of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Regional Council, said this at the 15th meeting of the Parliamentary Caucus on Indigenous People at its office in parliament yesterday.
Led by Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury, president of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of CHT affairs, members of the caucus will visit the site of Dighinala, where BGB is setting up its battalion allegedly by evicting 21 families, today.
Though the CHT Peace Accord was signed 17 years ago, the government is yet to implement the accord fully and determine the ownership of land in the region, said Santu.
There is no khas land in CHT as the land management system is totally different here; all land belongs to the original inhabitants of the CHT, he said, adding that setting up of military establishments was a violation of the CHT Peace Accord.
The government should also not take any development projects in CHT without consulting the people living there, he added.
Fazle Hossain Badsha, convener of the caucus, moderated the meeting where lawmakers Rashed Khan Menon, Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury, Abdul Latif, Yasin Ali, Firoza Begum Chinu, Hazera Sultana; Prof Mesbah Kamal, indigenous leaders  Sanjeeb Drong, Mangal Chakma, and Shaktipada Tripura were present.
“After visiting the site, we will hold a meeting in Dhaka again on the issue and decide our next move,” said Badsha.
The government wants to implement the CHT peace accord, and therefore, it has been working on it, he added.
