Girl saved from underage marriage, 4 jailed

A mobile court sentenced four people to one month's imprisonment each for arranging marriage of an underage schoolgirl at Marichabari village in Aditmari upazila yesterday.
The convicts are bridegroom Khalilur Rahman, 29, his father Yasin Ali of Dakkhin Gobda village, and bride's father Shahid Ali of Marchibari village in Aditmari upazila; and a moulvi named Rezaul Karim of Karnapur village in Sadar upazila.
Police said Shahid Ali arranged marriage of his daughter Beauty Khatun, 15, a class X student of Behelabari High School, with Khalilur. Moulvi Rezaul was called in to solemnise the marriage.
On information, a police team, led by Aditmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Zahurul Islam, rushed to the spot, stopped the marriage and arrested the four. Later, the court led by the UNO punished the four.
