Preceded by unprecedented political violence that took away lives of many and sent panic across the country centring the 10th parliamentary election, the first few days of the year heralded an ominous sign for Bangladesh. As if to make it true, the year saw the deaths of a large number of luminaries and gruesome events, like the abduction and killing of seven people in Narayanganj and Pinak-6 launch capsize. Marked by a number of verdicts on war crimes accused, the year also saw the deaths of former Jamaat-e-Islami chief of Ghulam Azam and nayeb-e-ameer AKM Yusuf and former BNP minister Abdul Alim in the prison. Meanwhile, achievements also came, especially in sports when Bangladesh cricket team whitewashed Zimbabwe both in Test and one-day international series at home.
