Want to be up there with Ronaldo and Messi: Kane

Far from sating his appetite, the match-winning brace he scored in the World Cup game against Tunisia on Monday seems to have left England captain Harry Kane wanting even more. The Tottenham striker has targeted the very apex of football as he was quoted in a BBC Sport article on Tuesday as saying that he wants to be the ‘best in the world’ and up there with Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo is the current Ballon d’Or winner and along with Messi has held the award, that bestows the status of being the best footballer in the world, a record five times.

"I want to prove myself at a major tournament. I want to be up there with the best in the world and the only way to do that is to perform on the big stage and in the big moments,” Kane, whose injury time goal in the Group G game gave England the decisive advantage in a 2-1 win, was quoted as saying.

Scoring all the goals for his side is reminiscent of Ronaldo’s exploits in Portugal’s opener against Spain, when his hattrick -- including a screamer of a free kick in the 88th minute on June 15 -- levelled the margin in a 3-3 draw.

"Ronaldo is the best in the world, up there with Messi, but the challenge is there to be with them. I have been itching to get out there and showcase myself on the big stage.

"To be the best player in the world you have to aim high. You can't aim low.”

If Kane can help the 1966 champions do something special in the ongoing tournament, he will have gone a long way to achieving his desired status.
