Gundogan booed by German fans

Ilkay Gundogan was booed by German fans in their warm-up game against Saudi Arabia on Friday, as supporters expressed anger over a controversial meeting the player attended in May with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. It was their first game after the controversy.

Midfielder Gundogan came on as a second-half substitute (57th minute) in Germany’s 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia in Leverkusen, but was jeered by fans as he entered the pitch and also whenever he touched the ball.

The 27-year-old had appeared at the meeting alongside fellow Germany international Mesut Ozil, and both presented Erdogan with signed shirts and whom he had referred  `my president’. The players were born in Germany but are of Turkish descent.

German fans were not happy though, they criticised both of them but Ozil was saved as he was injured, did not appear on that game.

Germany manager Joachim Low appeared angered by the crowd’s jeering.
