101 eminent citizens urge govt to cancel hospital project in Ctg’s CRB area
One hundred and one distinguished citizens from Chattogram, in a joint statement, have urged the government not to set up a hospital in CRB area of the port city -- fearing that it will leave a bad impact on environment and ecosystem.
The citizens include Vice Chancellor of Premier University Chattogram Prof Dr Anupam Sen, Dainik Azadi Editor MA Malek, Prof Dr AQM Serajul Islam, poet and journalist Abul Momen, Advocate Rana Dasgupta, Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Mahbubul Alam, Chattigram Press Club President Ali Abbas, former Vice Chancellor of Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology Jahangir Alam, Dr Mahfuzur Rahman and Begum Mushtari Shafi, reports our Chattogram correspondent.
The statement, which was issued yesterday, said Central Railway Building (CRB) area is known as the "oxygen centre" of the port city. People come here every day for morning and evening walks and to take in fresh air, it said.
The area is surrounded by a number of century-old trees that have become habitat for birds, the statement said, adding, the CRB was built as the headquarters of Bengal and Assam Railway in the then undivided India in 1895 and so it is an important heritage site also.
Building a hospital in the area would leave a negative impact in the uniqueness of the area as well as on the environment, the eminent citizens said.
They urged the government to shift the project to another area of Chattogram where a hospital can be built without comprising with environment.
The statement further mentioned that there are many barren areas of Bangladesh Railway in the outskirt of the city and even in the city. There are also many areas of BR occupied by illegal occupiers, it said, adding that the hospital can be built in one of those areas.
