The Film Heritage Foundation announced on Wednesday that a restored 4K version of Oscar-winning filmmaker Satyajit Ray's 1970 film "Aranyer Din Ratri" (Days and Nights in the Forest), featuring Soumitra Chatterjee, Sharmila Tagore, and Rabi Ghosh, will be showcased at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

The covered Foundation shared a newly designed poster of "Aranyer Din Ratri", noting that Satyajit Ray's masterpiece was restored by The Film Foundation's World Cinema Project at L'Immagine Ritrovata, in collaboration with Film Heritage Foundation, Janus Films, and The Criterion Collection.

Based on the novel of the same name by Bengali author Sunil Gangopadhyay, the film tells the story of four city men from Calcutta — portrayed by Soumitra Chatterjee, Subhendu Chatterjee, Samit Bhanja, and Rabi Ghosh — who embark on a weekend getaway into the forest.

The Cannes screening will be attended by actress Sharmila Tagore and filmmaker Wes Anderson.

Also attending the screening will be Purnima Dutta, head of Piyali Films and producer of Aranyer Din Ratri, along with Margaret Bodde, Executive Director of The Film Foundation, and Shivendra Singh Dungarpur of the Film Heritage Foundation.

The festival organisers have extended their heartfelt thanks to director Sandip Ray, son of Satyajit Ray.

In an interview earlier this month, Purnima Dutta shared, "We received the news about a month ago that the film would be shown at the Cannes Film Festival, but we waited for the official confirmation from the festival organisers. We're extremely happy. Satyajit Ray's films are regularly featured at festivals worldwide, but this occasion is particularly special because 'Aranyer Din Ratri' will be presented in 4K resolution."

"Aranyer Din Ratri" was nominated for Best Film at the 20th Berlin International Film Festival in 1970. Its sequel, "Abar Aranye", directed by Goutam Ghose, was released in 2003 and followed the original characters and their families as they revisit the forest.

The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will be held from May 13 to May 24.
