Anwarul Haque, Shabnam Mushtari to receive Nazrul Award

Researcher Anwarul Haque and singer Shabnam Mushtari have been named as this year's recipients of the Bangla Academy's Nazrul Award. The awardees are being recognised for their contributions to the study, performance, and promotion of the works of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

The announcement was made through a press release issued by Bangla Academy this afternoon.

The awards will be conferred at the Nazrul Jayanti celebration, to be held on Sunday ( May 25) afternoon at the Bangla Academy premises. Each award includes a cash prize of Tk 1 lakh, along with a crest and an uttorio.

Professor Anwarul Haque was born on January 19, 1952, in Mogholtuli of Cumilla. A former student of literature at the University of Chittagong, he retired from the Bengali department of Cumilla Victoria Government College in 2010. 

A lifelong academic, Professor Haque has dedicated his scholarly pursuits to exploring Nazrul's life and works. His notable publications include "Nazrul O Taar Bairipokkho", "Nazrul Parikrama", and "Nazrul Nargis Promila Nobomulyayon", among others. Known for his lucid and spontaneous storytelling, his second short story collection is titled "Premoj".

Shabnam Mushtari began her journey in Nazrul Sangeet in the early 1960s and was a prominent face on television during its formative years. Over the years, she released several albums featuring Nazrul's songs. Her father, Talim Hossain, was a noted Bengali poet, while her mother, Begum Mafruha Chowdhury, served as editor of the women's section at Dainik Bangla, and was also a fiction writer and journalist. Her younger sisters, Yasmin Mushtari and Parveen Mushtari, are also noted Nazrul Sangeet artistes.
