Remembering ‘Polly Samrat’ Abdul Alim on his 47th death anniversary
'Polly Samrat' Abdul Alim ruled over the music industry with his humble and down-to-earth melodies. In his long and illustrious career, the artiste had many memorable songs to his credit, including Ei Je Duniya Kishero Lagia", "Shorbonasha Padma Nodi", and "Holudia Pakhi Shonar Boron", among others.
Being one of the pioneering figures in establishing folk songs, Abdul Alim was honoured with some of the most prestigious awards, including the Ekushey Padak, National Film Award, and Independence Award.
Today marks the 47th death anniversary of this eminent singer. On this day, The Daily Star spoke to his children Nurjahan Alim, Azgar Alim, and Zahir Alim.
My father was my very first music teacher: Azgar Alim
I always wanted to become a singer and my father was my very first music teacher. I still remember how he wanted me to perfect the tune, lyrics, and rhythm of a song first, and only then, allow me to sing the track.
"A song is no different than a human being and you have to let it build itself and make a place in your mind," he often said while giving me music lessons. He was also very particular and selective about his songs as he believed that a good song takes a lot of dedication.
I still remember how he cancelled his concert in Bogura at the last moment after I got sick and had to be hospitalised. He loved all of us with all his heart.
My father was simple, humble and very generous: Zahir Alim
I often visited the market with my father and I still remember the smile on the faces of the shop owners and keepers upon the sight of him. They always said that my father was simple, humble, and very generous.
I was on my way somewhere with my father and we were stuck at the Mailbag rail signal. While we were waiting for the train to pass, a scream suddenly made way to our ears, "Naiya Re Naier Badam". Apparently, it was one of my father's fans who was trying to express his love and admiration towards his songs.
I miss the crowds of his fans, the praises and most of all, I miss being in his shelter.
He is, and always will be my hero: Nurjahan Alim
Despite his busy schedules, my father loved cooking. Be it Eid or any other celebrations, we would often find him in the kitchen, trying new recipes or making our favourite dishes.
He loved and respected his fans just as they adored him. He always kept song requests and never disheartened his listeners.
However, he was very strict when it came to our education and wanted to bring us up as good global citizens.
I loved the way my father balanced his career and family time. He is, and always will be my hero.
