Friends identify 3 Dhaka cafe attackers

All went missing in last few months

Friends, former classmates and other acquaintances have started identifying the Holey Artisan Bakery attackers with the help of social media after the SITE Intelligence Group on Saturday published photos of five gunmen who the IS claims killed 22 people including two policemen.

The photos of five IS recruits show that these militants are young -- around 21 to 27 years old. Friends and former classmates have so far identified three of these five IS militants and it seems that they come from well-off families and probably had private education.

One thing is common about these three persons—all of them disappeared a few months back.

The police headquarters last night released the names of five gunmen -- Akash, Bikash, Don, Badhon and Ripon -- with photographs of their corpses. No other details of the assailants or their motives were given.

However, the friends have different names for three of them—identifying them through the social media.

Nibras Islam:

Nibras Islam has been identified as one of the assailants as per the photo posted by SITE.  From posts on his Facebook wall, which has now been deactivated, it has been found that Nibras went missing from Uttara on February 3rd.

Nibras’s friends seeking anonymity have confirmed that he has been missing for the last few months. He studied in Turkish Hope School and then studied in North South University, a top private university in Dhaka. From here, he went to pursue higher studies in Monash University, Malaysia campus. The time frame of his educational background could not be ascertained yet.

Nibras also has a Twitter account where he last made his post on December 1, 2014. Some of the posts reveal that he was probably hurt by an affair gone wrong. On October 14 that year he posted: I am always there for you. When you need me. I m just a call away. But it seems you replaced me. Don't want you to be confused anymore.

He also followed on Twitter account of Shami Witness (Musings on Bilad ash Sham,Sunni Revolutions,Economic Collapse, Post-industrial society, Technology, History etc) and Anjem Choudary (I am a Muslim who believes that Islam is something we must believe in (Tawheed), live by (Shari'ah) and struggle and sacrifice).

Meer Saameh Mubasheer:

Meer Saameh Mubasheer was a class 11 (A-level) student. He also went missing from Gulshan area between February 29 and March 1 when he was on his way to a coaching center “Eminence”, according to Facebook posts that were widely circulated during the time he went missing.

One Mahamudur Rahman, who posted on Facebook that Mubasheer went missing on March 1, yesterday posted: I am just astonished! 1st March, 2016 I posted his photo in this Facebook Page because he was missing from his campus. Link - But after ISIS published those photo of ‪#‎DhakaAttack attackers, I was thundered! Cause this was the same guy! He is Meer Saameh Mubasheer :(

Unconfirmed sources say he studied in Scholastica, a top English medium school in Dhaka.

Rohan Imtiaz:

The third assailant has been identified as Rohan Imitiaz, son of Imtiaz Khan Babul, who has also been missing for the last few months according to one Facebook post of his father on June 21 where he shared an old photo of them, asking Imitiaz where he was and also requesting him to come back.

Rohan’s father is said to be a city Awami League leader. Rohan also used to be an A-level student of Scholastica, secondary sources confirmed.

The Daily Star could not idependently verify any of the claims.
