ULAB Lit Salon to host discussion on Partition and its aftermath on August 13
After hosting the Bangladesh launch of Cyber Mage, the critically acclaimed novel by Saad Z Hossain, and then an evening of discussions over the Bangladeshi passion for short stories, ULAB Literary Salon will engage the audience with a discussion on Partition and its effects on Saturday, August 13 at 5 PM. The event is open to the public and will take place at the capital's ULAB Research Building auditorium on Satmasjid Road, Dhanmondi.
In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Partition of India on August 15, 1947, the Lit Salon will take into its ambit the Bengal Partition of 1905, a second Partition of Bengal—and the Indian subcontinent in 1947—and the birth of Bangladesh in 1971. The Salon will showcase aspects of these partitions, living histories that bind India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Noted and respected academicians, writers, and historians of the memory of Partition will join the discussion: Prof. Niaz Zaman, among Bangladesh's best-known editors and academics, and Professor of English at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB); Prof. Sayeed Ferdous, Head of the Anthropology department at Jahangirnagar University and a noted researcher and writer on Partition; Dr. Rituparna Roy, a Kolkata-based academic and initiator of the Kolkata Partition Museum; and Aanchal Malhotra, a New Delhi-based writer who has written two engaging books related to the western Partition, Remnants of A Separation and In the Language of Remembering.
Prof. Kaiser Haq, mentor of the Lit Salon, will helm the conversation along with author and ULAB visiting faculty Sudeep Chakravarti.
The Lit Salon is an initiative of the Department of English and Humanities at University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB). The Lit Salon is a first of its kind literary platform in Dhaka to bring together writers, readers and publishers from Bangladesh and elsewhere in South Asia in an informal, engaging setting.
Once a month, each month, the ULAB Lit Salon offers Dhaka's literary minded a Saturday evening of book launches of leading authors, book readings, discussions, book signing, and sale of books at a discount by The Bookworm and ULAB Press, ULAB Lit Salon's partners.
