Criminals beat schoolgirls, six hospitalised
Delinquents beat up several schoolgirls in front the Primary Teachers Training Institute at Saptibari village in Aditmari upazila under the district when they were returning home from a science fair held at a nearby village yesterday afternoon.
Injured by the criminals, six girl students of Class IX of Sarpukur High School at Sarpukur village of Aditmari upazila were admitted to the upazila health complex.
A group of youths intercepted 14 girl students of the school when they were returning home from the Interschool Science and Technology Fair held at Manosika Bhaban at Khatapara village of Aditmari upazila, said police and the victim girls.
They beat up the students with wooden sticks, leaving six girls injured.
Demanding action, the school students barricaded Lalmonirhat-Burimari Highway on the spot from 3:30pm to 4:30pm.
They withdraw the blockade as police assured them of taking necessary action against the attackers.
"A group of youths disturbed the girls of our school and took their photographs on the fair premise. As the girls complained to the fair organisers, the criminals got furious and they attacked our students on the road," said Anwarul Islam, a teacher of the school.
Abu Taleb Miah, headmaster of the school, said they were preparing to lodge case in this connection with Aditmari police station yesterday evening.
"We will go for tougher programme, if the police fail to take proper action against the criminals by 48 hours," he said.
Sub-Inspector Samiul Islam of the police station said police were trying to arrest the culprits.
In another incident, transport workers barricaded Lalmonirhat-Burimari road at Mission Intersection in Lalmonirhat town from 5:00pm to 6:00pm yesterday protesting beating of a microbus driver by a traffic inspector.
The barricade was withdrawn as the ASP (Circle) in Lalmonirhat Adibul Islam assured taking necessary step after inquiry.
