House help who tortured elderly woman, looted valuables in Dhaka's Malibagh area arrested

The domestic help who brutally tortured an elderly woman and fled with cash and valuables on Monday from her employer's Malibagh house was arrested early today.

A team from DMP's Shahjahanpur Police Station along with local police arrested Rekha Akter from Ranisankail upazila in Thakurgaon district around 3:00am, Sub-inspector Rezaul Karim of Shahjahanpur Police Station, who led the drive, told The Daily Star.

Rekha has already spent some money she looted from the house. She was being brought to Dhaka, Rezaul, who is investigating the case, said.

On Monday morning, Rekha beat up 70-year-old Bilkis Begum with a stick for the key of the locker when other family members were not home.

She made away with gold ornaments, cash, television and other valuables. CCTV camera at the house recorded the crime.

The elderly woman is now being treated at a hospital.

SI Rezaul said Rekha first took shelter in Dhaka's Demra area and then moved to Thakurgaon.

Rekha used to work as a temporary house help at the flat for over a year but joined as full-time domestic help on January 14.

Police are looking into whether she had accomplices.
