Hefajat mayhem: ex-MP arrested from Sylhet, sent to Brahmanbaria jail
Advocate Maulana Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury, a former lawmaker from the Sunamganj-3 constituency, has been arrested and sent to Brahmanbaria jail in a case filed over Hefajat-e-Islam's March 26 mayhem.
Around 1:15 am on Thursday, a team of Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Dhaka, arrested him from Sylhet city's Bankalapara area over vandalism and arson attack at Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila Land Office.
Contacted, Qutbul Alam, investigation officer and CID's inspector, said that they have sought a five-day remand for Shahinur Pasha but the court is yet to set a date for hearing the petition.
Shahinur Pasha was the legal affairs secretary of now dissolved Hefajat's central committee, and the vice-president of Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam's central committee, reports our Brahmanbaria correspondent.
He has been shown arrested in the case, said Shahriar Rahman, Superintendent of Police of Brahmanbaria CID.
Kazi Md Didarul Alam, police inspector of Brahmanbaria court, told The Daily Star that senior Judicial Magistrate Ayesha Begum of Brahmanbaria Chief Judicial Magistrate's court sent Shahinur to jail yesterday (Friday).
AB Siddique, the office assistant of the land office, filed the case with the Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station on April 1 against 100 to 120 unknown individuals.
