Complaint lodged against Ctg jail superintendent, 3 others for ‘torturing prisoner’
A complaint was lodged against four people, including Chattogram Central Jail Superintendent, today for allegedly torturing a prisoner in jail.
A jailer, an assistant surgeon of Chattogram jail hospital and a civilian are the other named accused, said Advocate Bhulon Lal Bhoumik, the prisoner's lawyer.
Prisoner Rupam Kanti Nath, who was allegedly tortured by the four, is undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) under the custody of jail authority, said Advocate Bhulon.
The victim's wife Jharna Rani Debnath lodged the complaint with the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Hossain Md Reza today accusing the three jail officials and one Ratan Bhattachariya, Rupam's business partner, for torturing her husband in jail custody. The court did not pass any order after filing of the complaint, added the lawyer.
According to the complaint, after a business-related disagreement, Ratan filed a case accusing Rupam last year.
Rupam was sent to Chattogram central jail on December 15 last year in connection with the case, according to the complaint.
"A few days ago, the jail authority called the victim's wife saying Rupam's condition was very serious and he was being given treatment at the hospital. In the phone call, the jail authority also said they will bear the cost of treatment and asked them not to worry," said Advocate Bhulon.
"Following the information, the victim's wife submitted a plea before the court to shift her husband from jail to hospital on February 28, and the court granted the plea. Later, the victim's wife met with her husband at CMCH where she found injury marks on his whole body and learned of the torture," said the lawyer.
"The incident took place between February 24 and February 25 at Sangu-1 of jail territory," added the lawyer.
