Body recovered from mosque’s septic tank: Imam, his aide remanded
A Dhaka court today placed an imam and his accomplice on a five-day remand in connection with a case filed over the death of an RMG worker in the capital's Dakshinkhan area.
They are Maulana Md Abdur Rahman, imam of Dakshinkhan Sardar Para Mosque, and Asma, the wife of the victim.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nivana Khair Jesi passed the order after Investigation Officer Anuj Kumar Sardar, also sub-inspector of Dakshinkhan Police Station, produced the two with a 10-day remand prayer, court sources said.
Meanwhile, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) today said the murder was preplanned.
The victim's wife Asma Akter conspired the murder with the Dakshinkhan Sardar Para Mosque Imam Abdur Rahman seven days before Ramadan.
Rab arrested Abdur yesterday morning and after collecting information from him recovered Azharul's body from the tank. Rab later also arrested Asma.
Rab said Abdur used to visit the victim's house and teach Arabic to Azharul and his son.
At one point, Abdur and the victim's wife started a relation of which Azharul came to know of in March and he then asked the Imam to not to visit his home any longer, said the Rab official.
But the relationship continued and in late March, they plotted to assassinate Azharul, said Commander Moin.
At first, the plan was to kill Azharul by hiring someone but Asma later advised the imam to kill Azharul in his room, he said.
Finally on May 18, as per the plan, Asma sent her husband Azharul to Dhaka from Tangail. Next on May 19, the Imam called Azharul and asked him to visit the mosque and meet. After Azharul went to meet with Abdur after sunset, he asked the victim to go to his room and take rest and he would come shortly after Esha prayers, said Commander Moin.
Later, Azharul and Abdur discussed many issues and at a point Abdur attacked the victim with a machete kept in the room.
Abdur then hacked Azharul to death and cut his body into six pieces and dumped it into the septic tank before Fazr prayers, said Moin.
On May 25, locals informed the elite force that a bad odor was coming out from the area. Rab then started shadow investigation and learned about Azharul's disappearance.
Following further investigation, Rab arrested the Imam Abdur and recovered victim's body. The victim's younger brother Md Hasan filed a case with Dakhshinkhan police station yesterday night.
In primary interrogation, Abdur also admitted that he killed Azharul.
Law enforcers yesterday morning recovered the mutilated and decomposed body of Azharul Islam from the septic tank of the mosque at Dakshinkhan. Azhar had been missing since May 20.
Upon receiving complaints of blood stain on the mosque's stairs and bad odor from the sceptic tank, a Rab team first detained Abdur Rahman, said Rab officials.
Based on his information, the body was recovered from the septic tank.
According to the case documents, Abdur Rahman was in a relationship with the victim's wife Asma.
Following an altercation over their relationship, Abdur Rahman on May 20 stabbed Azhar with a knife, leaving him dead. He then mutilated the body and dumped it in the tank to cover up the murder, the case statements said.
