6 arrested for gang-raping woman on running bus in Ashulia

Police arrested six men on charge of gang-raping a woman on a running bus in Savar's Ashulia area.

The arrestees are: Md Ariyan (18), Md Saju (20), Monowar Hossain (24), Sumon Mia (24), Sohag (25), and Saiful Islam (40), Ziaul Islam, inspector of Ashulia Police Station, confirmed.

The arrests were made last night around 11pm after police rescued the victim from the bus, he said.

A patrol team of police became suspicious as the bus sped past them on C&B Bypass in Ashulia bridge area. Police chased the bus and intercepted it after crossing Jahangirnagar University, the inspector added.

After police rescued the victim, they held the six men on the bus -- including the driver and helper -- based on her verbal complaint.

The victim got on the bus of New Gram Bangla Paribahan from Nabinagar to go to Tongi Station Road, the inspector said quoting the woman.

But the driver changed the direction of the bus when it reached Ashulia bridge area.

"The victim said she was gang-raped on the bus by the six men," the police official said.

A case will be filed in this connection. The victim was in police custody; she will soon be sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment, he added.
