Two election office employees assaulted
Two employees of Nazirpur upazila election office were assaulted yesterday while they were distributing smart national identity (NID) cards at a primary school in the upazila.
The victims are Md Yasin Hossain, 27, operator of the election office, and search operator Md Rana Mir, 25.
Witnesses said the two were distributing smart NID cards when chaos was created as some people wanted to collect their cards without standing in the line.
At one stage, some youths entered the school and assaulted Yasin and Rana.
Rana told local journalists that some youths punched him. They also assaulted Yasin as he came to save him, he added.
District Election Officer Khan Abi Shahanur Khan said some locals assaulted two of his employees while they were distributing NID cards. But he claimed that the situation became calm after a while.
“We solved the problem with the help of local public representatives and law enforcers immediately,” he said.
The assailants could not be identified immediately.
Nazirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Habibur Rahman said some chaos was created in the school premises while the NID cards were being distributed.
“Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control,” he said, saying that no employee of the election office was assaulted and no complaint was filed with the police station in connection with the incident.
