Sorry state of a traditional market in Ghatail
Hamidpur market, a traditional and largest market in Ghatail upazila, has remained in poor state for long due to lack of renovation, causing immense sufferings to both the buyers and sellers.
The drainage system at the market is so poor that it gets submerged under knee deep water after a slight rain, said Abdur Rahman, a trader of the market.
The dirty water of the drains overflow and floods the market and enters the shops as the drains have not been cleared for long, he said.
On the other hand, the roads through the market have remained in battered condition for long due to lack of necessary repairing, he added.
Though the government gets good revenue from the market every year, no development work has been done in the market over the last one decade, said Rahman.
There is no shed in the market for the sellers and buyers to take shelter in during rain, said Swapan Miah, another trader of the market.
Due to lack of suitable place inside the market, many of the vendors with their goods sit on the adjacent to busy Tangail-Mymensing road, creating traffic jam, he added.
Admitting the poor condition of the traditional market, Abul Kalam Azad Mamun and Mohammad Nazrul Islam, chairmen of Digor and Digholkandi union parishads (UPs), said they raised the matter at the upazila development coordination meetings on several occasions.
Dilruba Ahmed, upazila nirbahi officer in Ghatail, said she was informed about the sorry state of the market and directed the upazila engineer to take necessary steps to resolve the problems as soon as possible.
