Girl drowns in river

A nine-year-old schoolgirl drowned in the Dhaleshwari River at Charkishoreganj in the district town yesterday. The deceased, Sumaiya Akhter Moni, daughter of Harun of the area, was a student of Class IV. Locals said Moni went to take a dip in the river at around 2:30pm and drowned.  


Man killed in Sunamganj

A man was hacked to death at Rajargaon village in Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj district on Tuesday night.  The deceased was identified as Siraj Miah, 60, son of late Syed Ali of the village. Police and family sources said there had been a longstanding feud between Siraj and one Nurul Haque of the village. An altercation took place between Siraj and Nurul Haque over previous enmity on Monday. As a sequel to the conflict, a gang allegedly led by Nurul Haque attacked Siraj with sharp weapons on Tuesday, leaving him seriously injured. He was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital where the on duty doctors declared him dead. A case was filed in this connection.


One held with pistol, bullets

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested a man along with a pistol and three bullets from his house at Dewanpur village in Goalondo upazila of Rajbari district early yesterday. The arrestee is Shafiqul Islam alias Uzzal, 38, son of late Iman Ali of the village. Acting on a tip-off, the elite force raided the house at 3:30am and arrested Uzzal along with the arms and bullets. Uzzal was accused in seven cases, including one for abduction, said ASP Aminur Rahman of Rab-8. The arrestee was later handed over to Goalondo Police Station, he said.


Elderly man strangled
Unb, Kushtia

An elderly man was found dead in Sadar upazila of the district yesterday morning. The dead is Kashem Ali, 75, a resident of Dakkhin Battail village. Locals found the body floating in a canal in Bhadalia area and informed the police. The law enforcers then reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for autopsy. Locals said Kashem went out of his house on Tuesday afternoon and did not return home since then. Criminals might have strangled Kashem and dumped the body in the canal, said Additional Superintendent of Police Abu Siddique.


Septuagenarian acid-burnt

A septuagenarian sustained burn injuries in an acid attack over pervious enmity at Kayetgaon village in Bahubol upazila of Habiganj district on Monday. The victim, Suruj Ali, 75, of the village, is now undergoing treatment at Acid Survivors Foundation (ASF) in Dhaka.  The victim's wife Moriom Bibi said a gang allegedly led by Nazrul Miah, 45, threw acid on Suruj when he was returning home from the toilet at around 9:00pm. Ali Farid, officer-in-charge of Bahubol Police Station, said there had been a longstanding feud between Suruj and his neighbour Nazrul. The feud might be the reason behind the attack, said police. Legal action will be taken against the culprits after filing of a case in this regard, said the OC.
