Shimulia-Kathalbari ferry services halted for poor navigability

Over 400 heavy vehicles waiting to cross Padma

More than 400 heavy vehicles remain stranded at the Shimulia-Kathalbari terminals as ferry services have been halted early today due to poor navigability in a stretch of the Padma.

Commuters have been sufferings as the lines of the vehicles are getting bigger, our Munshiganj correspondent reports.

Ferry services on this route had been facing troubles since last week but last night it became severe on the Louhajang turning point, said Assistant General Manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Nasir Uddin Chowdhury.

Owing to the navigability problems, the ferry services were halted, our Munshiganj correspondent reports quoting the BIWTC official.

Now, 16 ferries have been lying idle, he said.

Dredging is going on in the channel to restore the services, Nasir Uddin said.

The suspension of the ferry services has resulted in huge traffic, which has now spilled onto the highway, said Traffic Inspector of Mawa Helal Uddin.
