‘Robber’ killed in Joypurhat ‘shootout’

An alleged robber was killed in a “shootout” with police in Khetlal upazila of Joypurhat last night.

The identity of the dead is yet to be confirmed, reports our Dinajpur correspondent.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided Moheshpur area where a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery by placing logs on the road around 11:40pm, said Md Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Khetlal Police Station.

Sensing presence of the police personnel, the robbers opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate, the OC said.

The man was hit by bullets during the gunfight and died on the spot while his cohorts managed to flee, he added.

Police recovered some local weapons from the spot and sent the body to Joypurhat Modern Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Mollah Nazrul Islam, superintendent of Joypurhat police, also confirmed the “gunfight” that took place on the Joypurhat-Bogra highway.

On May 5, two robbers were killed in “gunfight” with police in the district.
