Over 100 rooftop plants cut down; woman held

Cops suspect she is mentally unstable; locals say garden destroyed following feud with plant owner

A woman has been detained after she cut down around 100 plants from a rooftop garden of her apartment building in Savar yesterday.

Police picked up Khaleda Akhter Lucky, 39, from her apartment in CRP Dagormora area for interrogation after a video of her cutting down plants on the rooftop eventually went viral on social media, said Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Savar Model Police Station.

The video created a huge outrage across the country as people flooded the video post with comments.

The video was recorded by a neighbour who cared for and had planted much of the rooftop garden.

In the video, Khaleda, wife of Selim Al Din who is the owner of two flats in the building, was seen chopping down plants of the rooftop garden with a sharp object, reports our Savar correspondent.

According to the residents of the building, Khaleda destroyed the plants following a feud with her neighbour who owns the plants. On the other hand, the OC said the woman seems to be mentally unstable.

No case was filed in this regard yet, the police official said.
