Woman beaten dead for dowry

A woman was beaten to death allegedly by her husband for dowry at her in-laws' house at Darjeepara village in Tetulia upazila of Panchagarh.

The victim was identified as Shefali Akhtar, 20, wife of Liton Islam, 25.

Shefali's husband Liton beat her on Sunday evening, leaving her seriously injured, said Sub-Inspector Md Manjurul Islam of Tentulia Police Station.

She was rushed to Tentulia Upazila Health Complex from where she was shifted to Panchagarh Sadar Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries yesterday, added Manjurul, also investigation officer of the case.

Quoting local people, Manjurul told this correspondent over cellphone that Shefali, daughter of Saibul Islam of Debnagar Barmatal village, was married to Liton, son of Khajimuddin, 53, of the same upazila about three years ago.

Liton used to torture her demanding dowry and arbitration was held on several occasions in this regard earlier, said the sub-inspector.

Liton beat Shefali mercilessly, leaving her injured seriously as she returned to her in-law's house from her paternal house on Sunday afternoon, he said.

When Shefali became senseless, Liton poured insecticide on Shefali's mouth to pass it off as suicide, he said.

Victim's father Saibul filed a case with the police station yesterday afternoon accusing five people, including Liton and in-laws.

Meanwhile, police arrested her father-in-law Khajimuddin and mother-in-law Salema Begum, 40.
