Three families ostracised
Three families have been receiving treatment as social pariahs for not following the arbitration over land issue in Korbanpur village of Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar.
The victim Kajal Ahmed said there was a dispute with Pakhi Mia over land issues. When the matter went to the local arbitrators including the panchayat committee, they took Tk 5,000 from both the parties and set the time of arbitration on 19 June 2020.
He said he took the land document on the day of the arbitration. In the arbitration, he demanded justice as per the paper.
But the arbitrators in the gram panchayat did not deliver any verdict following the document. Kajal filed a case in the Moulvibazar Senior Assistant Judge's Court on December 3, 2020 for justice.
Angered by Kajal's filing case, the arbitrators evicted three families from the village of Korbanpur on December 5, 2020.
They also forbade people in the area from visiting their businesses. They also threatened that if anyone went to their businesses, the consequences would be the same.
Akmal Hossain, another victim and brother of Kajal said, "Due to deportation, we have been subjected to extreme misconduct since December 14, even we are being barred from saying prayers in the local mosques."
"People are not coming to our business establishments and no one is even talking us," Akmal said.
Defendant Pakhi Mia, Panchayat Committee President Nazrul Mia, Members Cherag Mia, Chunu Mia, Hannan Mia, Qadir Mia have been served legal notice seeking to know the reason for expulsion.
Kajal Ahmed alleged that Nazrul Mia, the president of the panchayat committee, was a member of the ruling party. No one in the area dares to speak out against him. If anyone goes against him, they are also expelled from the society.
Jubel Ahmed, another victim, said the arbitrators have not yet returned us the money and the land documents deposited in the arbitration.
Besides, their children are not able to go to Maktab and learn Quran. Their peer speaks contemptuously of them.
"For which they are being traumatised. We are worried about the future of our children," he added.
Contacted, Nazrul Miah, president of the gram panchayat committee, said, "I am busy now. I will not talk about it."
However, another member of the panchayat committee, Chunu Mia, has admitted to have ostracised the three families.
Bhukshimoil Union Parishad Chairman Azizur Rahman Monir said, the panchayat committee expels each family from time to time.
Kulaura Upazila Nirbahi Officer ATM Farhad Chowdhury said, "I am not aware of the matter. If this has really happened, the incident is very tragic. Such deportation cannot happen in a civilized society. Legal action will be taken if necessary if we get written complaint in this regard."
