Step up efforts to solve Rohingya crisis amid humanitarian response shortfall: UNHCR
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) today stressed the need to redouble efforts to find solutions for the stateless and displaced Rohingya people.
The UN Refugee Agency also emphasised on stronger international support to this end ahead of this week's donor conference for Rohingya refugees.
The ongoing humanitarian response is facing a dramatic shortfall this year as less than half the requested funds have been received so far, UNHCR spokesperson Andrej Mahecic said at today's press briefing at the United Nations Office in Geneva.
"In 2020, the United Nations has appealed for more than $1 billion to meet the humanitarian needs of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. The spread of the Covid-19 pandemic has added layers of new challenges and needs to an already complex and massive refugee emergency," the UNHCR spokesperson said.
Support for critical services in host communities is also a priority, he said.
Together with the USA, UK and EU, UNHCR is co-hosting a virtual donor conference on October 22 to meet urgent humanitarian needs of forcibly displaced Rohingya people both inside and outside Myanmar, said a UNHCR press release.
