One month of Rayhan’s death: Citizens hold protest programme by lighting candles in Sylhet

A citizens' platform in Sylhet today observed the one month mark since the death of Rayhan Ahmed, who was allegedly tortured inside Bandarbazar Police Outpost in Sylhet and later succumbed to his injuries after being taken to hospital.
'Dushkal Protirodhe Amra', a newly formed citizens' platform in Sylhet, organised the protest programme this evening against Rayhan's death and all other custodial killings in the country by lighting candles in front of the police outpost.
Around a hundred people from all walks of life joined the event, holding candles and standing silently in front of the police outpost.
"The prime accused of the custodial killing managed to safely flee from the country after it was suggested to him by a senior officer, before he was finally arrested. We want that senior officer to be found and punished," speakers at the event demanded.
They also said that all illegal activities centering the police outposts must be stopped at once and the cycle of corruption in police forces should be uprooted completely so that no one dies in police custody in the future.
"All we want is justice and a reformation in the system so that no one dies after being tortured in custody like my brother did," Rayhan's younger brother Rabbi Ahmed Tanvir said.
He also demanded a judicial probe body for a fair investigation of the killing.
Workers Party Sylhet's President Sikondor Ali, indigenous leader Gouranda Patro, advocate Mahitosh Deb Moloy, and social worker Nigar Sadia, among others, were present along with the organisers Abdul Karim Kim, Ashraful Kabir, Debashish Debu, Advocate Debabratha Chowdhury Liton and others.
