Man held for rape attempt

Police on Saturday night arrested a man on charge of attempting to rape an intellectually challenged woman in Rangpur's Kaunia upazila the same night.

The arrestee, Abdul Latif Bhutto, 50, a cook, is son of late Abdul Mazid of Dhumgara village.

Quoting the victim's family members, police said the 28-year-old woman lives with her parents since her husband abandoned her a couple of months ago.

After having her meal on Saturday night, when she went to sleep in a separate room Bhutto entered the room and tried to rape her forcibly.

Meanwhile, hearing her cry for help, family members and neighbours and rushed to the spot and rescued her around 10:30pm.

They also caught Bhutto and handed him over to police.

Officer in Charge of Haragachh Police Station Rezaul Karim said the arrestee was produced before a court yesterday that sent him to jail.
