Man gets life for killing wife

A Dinajpur court sentenced a man to life imprisonment on Monday for killing his wife in Birganj upazila of the district in 2011.

The convict is Md Abdul Maleque, 30, son of Joynal Abedin of Miratungi village in the upazila. The court also fined him Tk 10,000. In default, he has to suffer three months more in jail.

Court sources said Md Mahmudul Karim, judge of the District and Sessions Judge's Court-2, handed down the verdict in a crowded courtroom in the afternoon.

According to the prosecution, Rehana Begum, daughter of Abdus Samad of Miratungi village in Birganj upazila, was married to Md Abdul Maleque in 2010. After their marriage, the couple used to quarrel frequently.

On February 14, 2011, Maleque and Rehana locked in an altercation over a trivial matter. At one stage, Maleque strangled Rehana.

Md Abdus Samad, father of the victim, filed a murder case with Birganj Police Station the following day. After investigation, police pressed charges against Maleque.
