A youth was detained by police over the death of his mother in Narayanganj's Rupganj upazila today.

The deceased, Delowara Begum (55), used to live with her son Saiful Islam (32) in the upazila's Shinglabo area.

According to locals, around 7:30pm they heard the sounds of a scuffle coming from Saiful's house. Neighbours went there and saw Saiful standing outside, Inspector Anisur Rahman Molla, in-charge of Bhulta Police Outpost, said quoting locals.

He added that when Saiful was asked about his mother, he tried to flee.

Locals prevented him from leaving and also found his mother's body inside the bathroom, the police official also said.

On information, police went to the spot, recovered the body and detained Saiful, the inspector said, adding that the body has been sent to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Legal steps were being taken, the official added.
