Journalist Kajol granted bail in one case under DSA, still can’t be released from jail

Incarcerated photojournalist Shafiqul Islam Kajol was granted bail by the High Court today in a case filed under Digital Security Act, his legal team confirmed to The Daily Star.

He, however, will not be able to walk out of jail yet, as he still has two more cases pending under the same act.

The Digital Security Act has been heavily criticised as a gag for journalists by civil society members and human rights groups alike.

HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order that granted him bail in the case.

Kajol's lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua had made the application for bail with the HC earlier last month.

Kajol was granted bail in a case filed against him at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station by Saifuzzaman Shikhor, ruling Awami League lawmaker from Magura-1.

They, however, said that the court needs more time to deliberate upon the other two DSA cases filed at Hazaribagh and Kamrangirchor police stations against Kajol, and set the date of the next hearing for December 15.

Kajol was denied bail a total of 13 times since his arrest, according to rights organisation Article 19.
