HC stays Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana's bail
The High Court today stayed a lower court order that granted bail to Sohel Rana, owner of Rana Plaza -- which collapsed killing at least 1,135 people in April, 2013 -- in a corruption case.
The stay order will continue for one week after reopening of the court's regular activities following the ongoing closure, the HC said.
The courts across the country are now closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Today, the High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission, challenging the lower court's bail order to Sohel Rana in the case.
The bench held a virtual hearing on the ACC's petition through video conference.
Following the HC order, Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik told The Daily Star that Sohel Rana cannot be released from jail.
ACC filed the case with Savar Model Police Station on December 31, 2017 against Sohel Rana on charge of amassing wealth worth Tk 2.54 crore beyond known sources of income.
A Dhaka court on May 17 this year granted bail to Rana in the graft case.
