Govt can’t risk children’s lives by opening educational institutions, says PM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today told the parliament that it is becoming difficult for children to continue staying at home but her government cannot put them at risk of death by opening educational institutions in the coronavirus pandemic.
Hasina said this while delivering her winding up speech in the first ever special session of parliament.
PM in her speech said that the USA, and several countries in the EU and England had opened up their educational institutions. "But in the face of increasing Covid-19 infection, those countries were forced to shut their schools again," she said.
Hasina said she along with the education minister have been discussing opening up educational institutions when the intensity of Covid-19 was in a downward trend.
"But there has been a second wave of Covid-19 in Europe. No treatment for this contagious disease is yet to be invented. There is a risk of infection if children go to school. Why will we take the risk in the case of our children," she questioned.
Issuing a note of warning that a second wave of Covid-19 may take place in the country, the PM urged everyone to wear masks when they go outside and follow hygiene rules.
