Cumilla trauma centre vandalised by relatives of patient who died after ‘wrong treatment’
Locals and relatives of a patient, who they said had died of wrong treatment, vandalised a trauma centre in Cumilla town last night, police said.
The incident took place around 10:30pm at the trauma centre in the town's Nazrul Avenue, reports our Cumilla correspondent.
Confirming the vandalism at the hospital, Anwarul Haque, officer-in-charge of Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station, told The Daily Star that police went to the spot on information and brought the situation under control.
The deceased is Mobarok Hossain (55) of Laksham upazila of the district.
He was admitted to the trauma centre with knee complications around 2:00pm yesterday, said Abul Hashem, elder brother of the deceased. Doctors decided to conduct surgery on Mobarok's knee and he was taken to operation theatre after paying Tk 44,000 for the surgery, he said.
At the operation theatre, Mobarok died after he was administered anaesthesia by Dr Safayet Shahin of the trauma centre, Abul Hashem alleged.
Angry relatives and other locals then vandalised the hospital around 10:30pm, the OC said.
Doctors and staff at the hospital had by then fled the scene.
Two patients at the hospital were injured in the incident, OC Anwarul said.
The body of the deceased has been handed over to family, the OC added.
No comments could be obtained from hospital authorities and no case was filed in this connection when this report was filed at 1:30am.
The OC said steps will be taken against those involved in the vandalism after examining the CCTV footage.
