Col (retd) Shawkat Ali laid to rest in Shariatpur

War hero and an accused in the historic Agartala Conspiracy Case, Colonel (retd) Shawkat Ali was laid to eternal rest with state honour and army gun salute at his village home in Naria, Shariatpur this afternoon.

Shawkat Ali, also former deputy speaker of parliament passed away at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka on Monday at the age of 83.

Before burial, Bangladesh Army gave a gun salute to honour the decorated freedom fighter who was the first director of Ordinance Core of Bangladesh Army, Udoy Shawkat Ali, grandson of the deceased, told The Daily Star.

Earlier in the morning, the body of Col (retd) Shawkat Ali was flown to Naria by a helicopter of the Armed Forces from the mortuary of CMH, said Udoy.

From the district stadium of Shariatpur, Shawkat Ali's coffin was taken to his home Shawdhinata Bhaban at around 11:00am.

Later, the body was taken to the Naria Shaheed Minar. Several hundred people paid tribute and respect to the war hero and the six times MP from Shariatpur-2 constituency.

Floral wreaths were placed on his coffin on behalf of different political and socio-cultural organisations as well as from distinguished personalities.

His second namaz-e-janaza was held at Naria BL High School ground and was attended by several thousand people.

State honour was given to the valiant freedom fighter under the arrangement of the deputy commissioner of Shariatpur after his janaza.

Army gave him gun salute before he was laid to final rest at the yard of his home, said Shawkat Ali's grandson who was present there at that time.
