Police arrested three persons including the owner of City Health Clinic in Chattogram's Chawkbazar area last night and sealed it off in connection with an abortion-related death.

A team from Civil Surgeon's office and police in a joint drive sealed off the clinic.

On May 15, college student Rifat Sultana died in the clinic after her friend admitted her there. The clinic conducted the abortion and she died but the clinic authority informed the family members that she died of coronavirus infection.

Eleven days after her death, the family members filed a case with Chawkbazar Police Station. Police found the involvement of the clinic and its staff in the death and arrested the three yesterday.

The arrestees are Md Harun Ur Rashid (60), Gita Das (45) and Sabina Yesmin Champa (43), said police. Harun is the owner of the clinic while Gita and Champa are not trained to be health workers.

The clinic has no documents except a trade license, said Deputy Commissioner (DC) (South) SM Mehedi Hasan of CMP, adding that the clinic has no doctors or trained nurses and it conducted abortions illegally.
