AL infighting leaves one dead, 5 hurt
A youth was killed and five others were injured in a clash between two factions of Awami League Rajapur union unit under Sreepur upazila of Magura district yesterday.
At least 10 houses were also vandalised during the clash. The deceased was rickshaw puller Rijabul Islam, 27, of the village.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Sudorshon Roy said Rajapur union AL activists got divided into two groups over the recently held election to the union parishad.
Of them, one faction was led by Shafiur Rahman alias Shafi Mollah and another by Chand Ali.
Some unidentified men hurled bricks at the house of one Badsha Mollah loyal to Shafi Mollah early yesterday.
Following the incident, the men of Shafi Mollah attacked the house of one Resarat Ali loyal to Chand Ali.
At one stage, both rival groups attacked each other with lethal weapons, leaving Rijabul loyal to Shafi Mollah, dead on the spot.
Five others from both sides were injured during the incident. They were admitted to Magura Sadar Hospital.
On information, police rushed to the spot and fired 13 gunshots to bring the situation under control.
Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble, said the ASP.
