9 personalities, one institution to get Independence Award
The government today announced the names of nine persons and an institution for the Independence Award for their outstanding contributions to the nation in various fields.
The personalities are: Bir Pratik Golam Dastagir Gazi, MP, late Commander (Retd) Abdur Rauf, late Muhammad Anwar Pasha, Azizur Rahman, Prof Dr Md Obaidul Kabir Chowdhury, Prof Dr AKMA Muktadir, freedom fighter SM Rois Uddin Ahmad, Kalipada Das and Ferdousi Mazumder.
The institution is Bharateswari Homes, which was nominated for its contribution to the education sector.
Dastagir, Rauf, Anwar Pasha and Azizur were nominated for their contributions to the country's liberation war and independence, while Prof Dr Obaidul and Dr Muktadir for their outstanding contributions in medical science.
Kalipada Das and Ferdousi Mazumder were nominated under the culture category and Rois Uddin for his work in literature.
The winners will be given the awards by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on March 25, a day before Independence Day, at Osmani Memorial Auditorium.
