3 killed in ‘gunfights’ in Dhaka, Cumilla, N’ganj

Three people were killed in separate “gunfights” with law enforcers in Dhaka, Cumilla and Narayanganj early today.

In Dhaka, a suspected criminal was killed in an alleged shootout with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Basila Garden City in Mohammadpur area.

Deceased Tanvir Ahmed Anik, 36, was the leader of notorious criminal gang 'Seven Star group', Lt Col Ashique Billah, commanding officer of Rab-2, told The Daily Star.

Anik was accused in at least seven murder cases and he was charged in all the cases, the Rab official said.

On information that fugitive Anik will enter the capital through Bosila Garden City, the elite force members set up a check post there.

But sensing presence of the law enforcers, Anik and his cohorts opened fire on Rab-2 team around 3.45am, triggering a “gunfight”, he said.

Anik was hit by bullets during the “gun battle”, the Rab officer said. He was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead.

Two firearms, five bullets and some sharp weapons were recovered from the spot, the Rab official said.

Sensing danger, the drug peddlers opened fire at police forcing them to retaliate, which triggered a “gunfight”.

When the criminals managed to flee the scene, police found bullet-hit Md Tofayel and rushed to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, our Cumilla correspondent reports.

The OC said, "Tofayel is accused in as many as six cases including drug, mugging and robbery. Police seized a LG with one round cartridge, a knife and 400 pieces of Yaba."
