Narcotics official on remand
A Jessore court yesterday granted one day remand for a narcotics department official arrested on charge of receiving bribe from a liquor trader.
Judge Sahinur Rahman of Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court of Jessore granted the remand when police produced Nazmul Kabir, acting deputy director of the Department of Narcotics Control, Jessore.
Public Prosecutor Ashraful Alam Biplab said he sought three-day remand for Nazmul Kabir on behalf of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), but the court granted the remand for one day.
ACC Assistant Director of Dhaka-1 Abdul Wadud was present at the court during the hearing, said Biplab. Wadud will interrogate Nazmul Kabir at the Jessore office during the remand period, he added.
Senior lawyers Debashish Das and MA Gafur defended the accused.
According to prosecution, Nazmul Kabir allegedly demanded Tk 3 lakh for renewal of license as bribe from liquor trader Sheikh Mahabbat Ali. It was, however, settled for Tk 2 lakh. An ACC team from Dhaka arrested Nazmul Kabir red-handed at his office in Jessore on January 3 while he was receiving the money.
