Alfadanga has no water supply and sanitation system since the start of its journey in 2016

There has been no mentionable development in Alfadanga municipality in the district since it started functioning on April 6 in 2016, and so, around 20,000 people of the area are deprived of basic civic amenities.

The municipality covers around 11.84 square kilometres and the first election was held on December 28 in 2017. Md Saifur Rahman was elected mayor.

Durga Rani Das of the municipality said there is no water supply and sanitation system and they have to depend on tube-wells for drinking water.

"We have to pay municipality tax but get no facilities," said Hafij Mondol.

Rubel Mollah of Niladanga Government Primary School area said they do not feel like they are living in a municipality area as the facilities are very poor, adding that most of the roads are flooded during the rainy season.

Sarowar Hossain said buses, microbuses and trucks are kept parked on the roads as there is no parking area in the municipality.

Alfadanga municipality Secretary Mahedi Hasan said most of the roads of the municipality are under Local Government Engineering Department and Zila Parishad, so no repair work has been done yet.

They are searching for land to build the municipality building as they also have been suffering because they do not have their own office, he added.

"We could not meet the demand of local people as allocation was very poor and we have to struggle with various problems. But we shall take necessary steps as soon as possible to solve those problems,” the mayor said.

The municipality office is running in a rented house at the upazila parishad compound in Alfadanga upazila.
