Man to walk gallows for killing wife
A Faridpur court yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Sadarpur upazila in 2010.
The death penalty awardee is Mithu Dewan, 24, son of Shukur Ali Dewan of Kandi village in the upazila, according to UNB.
According to the prosecution, Mithu married Dulufa Begam, 20, of the upazila in March, 2010. After their marriage, Mithu and his family members had been putting pressure on Dulufa to bring dowry from her parents.
On May 13, 2010, Mithu and his family locked in an altercation with Dulufa over the issue and at one stage, they strangled her
Victim's brother Salam Talukder filed a murder case with the police station concerned the following day, accusing Mithu and his father Shukur.
Police later submitted charge sheet against Mithu and Shukur. Shukur died during the trial.
After examining witnesses and case records, Judge Bazlur Rahman of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal handed down the verdict.
Our Kushtia correspondent reported that a Meherpur court yesterday sentenced five people to life imprisonment for killing three people in Gangni upazila of the district in 1994.
Additional District and Sessions judge TM Musa passed the order.
According to the prosecution, a gang of 5/6 armed men led by Nuruzzaman Laltu, an outlaw, entered the house of Shawkat Malitha at Jalshuka village in the upazila Meherpur on August 29, 1994 and killed Shawkat Malitha, his son Helal Uddin Malitha and their neighbour Nur Islam.
In Pirojpur, a court here yesterday awarded life imprisonment to a man for killing his son in 2010.
The convicted is Md Atahar Ali, 60, son of late Hashem Ali of Beeldumuriya village under Nazirpur upazila of the district, reports our correspondent.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Nazimuddowla pronounced the verdict at noon.
