Jubo Dal leader among 2 killed in ‘gunfights’ with cops
Two persons including a Jubo Dal leader were killed in separate “gunfights” with police in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, and Ramgati upazila of Lakhsmipur early today.
Savar
Shah-Alam Nayan, 44, Jubo Dal organising secretary of Savar municipality unit, was killed in a “shootout” at Birulia.
Kamrujjaman, a sub-inspector of Savar Model Police Station, said a police team went to a nursery of Krishibid Foundation in Birulia area around 2:30am to recover firearms.
Sensing presence of law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on them. In retaliation, police shot fires targeting the miscreants in self-defence that triggered the “gunfight”.
At one stage, Nayan was caught in the line of fire and suffered bullet injuries, the SI said.
Later, he was whisked off to Savar Upazila Health Complex where a doctor declared him dead.
However, his family members claimed that Nayan was picked up by law enforcers early Friday.
“Some police personnel including SI Tanmoy, SI Ahsan and constable Sumon picked up Nayan from a relative’s house in Geneva camp area of Mohammadpur in Dhaka,” victim’s brother-in-law Samrat Ahmed Parvez told The Daily Star over mobile phone.
“They then took the handcuffed Nayan to our house in Hemayetpur area of Savar and demanded Tk 2.5 lakh for releasing him. And we gave them the money,” Samrat claimed.
But the law enforcers did not release Nayan immediately saying they did not have the key of the handcuffs.
Later, when Nayan’s in-laws inquired of his arrest at Savar Model Police Station, police said they had no information about it, Samrat said.
A case was filed with the police station in this connection.
The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for autopsy.
Lakhsmipur
An alleged robber was killed and four policemen sustained injuries during a “gunfight” between a robber gang and police at Bibirhat in Ramgati upazila.
The deceased was identified as Mizanur Rahman, son of Abdus Salam, a resident of Jiarchar in the upazila.
OC of Ramgati Police Station M Iqbal Hossain said a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery at Bibirhat in the early hours today.
On information, a team of police conducted a drive. Sensing the presence of police, the robbers opened fire at the law enforcers.
In retaliation, police also fired back which triggered a gunfight, leaving Mizanur dead on the spot around 4:30am.
Four police personnel of Ramgati Police Station -- sub-inspector Humayan Kabir, constables Musa Miah, Alamgir Hossain and Nur Uddin -- were also injured in the incident.
They were rushed to Ramgati Upazila Health Complex while the body of Mizanur was sent to the morgue for autopsy.
Police also recovered one LG, two rounds of bullets and three machetes from the spot.
Mizanur stood accused in several cases, the OC added.
