Former BCL leader stabbed dead by rivals in Pabna
A former Chhatra League leader was stabbed to death by his rivals following long-standing enmity in Chatmohar upazila of Pabna last night.
Deceased Habibur Rahman Habib (21) was a former organising secretary of Handial union unit of BCL, a front organisation of Awami League.
Chairman of Handial union Md Jakir Hossain said Habib had a long-standing enmity with Russel Ahmed, secretary of the union unit of BCL, over establishing supremacy in the area.
Both Habib and Russel had an altercation over playing a cricket match yesterday afternoon, he said quoting locals.
As a sequel to the incident, supporters of Russel attacked Habib and one of his fellows Nasir Hossain and stabbed them near Handial Girls School around 8:00pm.
They were being taken to Catmohar Upazila Health Complex while Habib died on the way, said Jakir.
Confirming the incident, Officer-In-Charge of Chatmohar Police Station Sheikh Nasir Uddin said the body was recovered and sent to Pabna Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy today.
The incident might take place following a long-standing enmity between Habib and Russel and other local BCL men over establishing supremacy in the area, the OC said.
Police are investigating the incident and trying to nab the culprits, he added.
When contacted, Md Abdul Alim, president of Chatmohar upazila BCL unit, said if any BCL men were involved with the murder, organisational steps would be taken against them.
Alim however claimed that the incident is not related to politics.
