Road crashes kill 5

Five people, including a woman and her 10-year-old son, were killed, and 36 others injured  in road accidents yesterday.

In Chapainawabganj, Sherina Begum, 35, wife of Abul Kalam Azad, her son Emon Ali and Zakera Begum, 39, wife Mohammad Mahbub of Azmatpur village in the upazila, were killed on Chapainawabganj-Sonamasjid highway in Shibganj of the district.

Chowdhury Ahmed Jubaear, officer-in-charge of Shibganj Police Station, said the accident occurred when an empty truck from Chapainawabganj town collided head-on with a three-wheeler carrying the five at Pailing intersection.

Sherina died on the spot while Emon and Zakera died on their way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Police seized the truck and arrested its driver Tofazzol Hossain.

Meanwhile in Gaibandha, at least 31 people were injured when a truck collided head-on with a bus near Avirampur Bridge on Rangpur-Bogra highway yesterday.

The injured were rushed to Gobindaganj and Palshbari health complexes.

Following the accident, vehicular movement came to a halt for one hour, highway police said.

Meanwhile in Naogaon, two people were killed and three more injured when a battery-run three-wheeler collided head on with a tractor in Patnitola upazila yesterday, reports our Dinajpur correspondent.

The deceased were Nur Islam, 57, of Jahangirpara and Afzal Hossain, 55, of Bagmar village of Naogaon.

Locals send them to Patnitola Upazila Health Complex where the two died, said Azim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Patnitola police.
