In line with tight restrictions imposed to ensure security during Ashura, police have banned Tajia processions of the Shia Muslims during night throughout Dhaka.

The traditional Tajia processions have been mandated to be held from 10:00am to 1:30pm on October 12, the 10th day of Muharram that marks the Ashura.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah laid out the instructions at a press briefing at Hussaini Dalan in Old Dhaka – the prime convergence spot for Shias in Dhaka.

Already, use of blades or sharp weapons or sticks has been made off limits during this year’s Ashura after a bomb attack left one person dead at the Hussaini Dalan last year.

Besides, use of close circuit cameras, vigilant law enforcers, dog squads, intelligence men, intense frisking and several other measures have been taken this year to ensure security.
